We are 313

Do not Overlay 313, Let's Split it. 

313 Table is being led to create this petition through our Americana engagement board.

The 313 area code is one of our nation's first area codes with strong roots in Detroit culture that has made it part of our identity.  Plans are underway to overlay Detroit's 313 area code with a new 679 area code.  This overlay could dilute (water down) our longstanding ties and recognition with 313 as the City would now have 2 area codes.  

Another option is to introduce the new area code as a split, which would create 2 zip code areas within 313's current zip code area.  As the 313 area code currently includes Metro Detroit areas (suburbs), The City of Detroit proper (within city boundaries) could keep its 313 area code and Metro Detroit could pick up the 679 area code.  

We intend to share this petition at the public hearing on Thursday March 9th and encourage as many people as possible to join us.  

"A public hearing is set for March 9, 2023, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Wayne County Community College District’s downtown campus in the Frank Hayden Community room #236, 1001 W. Fort Street in Detroit to take public comment on the proposal to add the 679 area code."
